Heavy monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across Northeast India, causing landslides, flash floods, and major damage to infrastructure. Multiple states are facing transport disruptions, flooded towns, and isolated villages, while weather forecasts warn that more rain is expected in the coming days.

Landslide in Manipur Blocks Key Highway

In Manipur, a large landslide hit Tamenglong district early Friday, blocking the crucial National Highway-37 that links Imphal to Silchar via Jiribam. The landslide, which occurred near Nungdalal village, stretched over 30 meters and stranded over 200 vehicles, including oil and LPG tankers and other essential supply trucks.

While the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) began clearing operations using excavators, continuous rainfall has slowed progress and delayed traffic restoration.

Guwahati Faces Urban Flooding After Torrential Rain

In Assam, the state capital Guwahati witnessed severe urban flooding on Thursday due to heavy rainfall and water runoff from the Meghalaya hills.

Areas like Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Beltola, Hatigaon, and Wireless were submerged, with knee-deep water entering homes and streets. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) conducted rescue operations using boats, especially in severely affected neighborhoods like Rukminigaon.

According to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), the city’s drainage systems failed to handle the downpour, leading to massive waterlogging.

Floods Sever Connectivity in Majuli Island

In Majuli, the world’s largest river island, a powerful Brahmaputra River flood swept away a 350-meter bamboo bridge in Bhakat Chapori, disconnecting 17 villages from the mainland.

Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh on Red Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for several Meghalaya districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall through May 31.

In East Khasi Hills, a landslide near Pynursla raised concerns of more land failures, although no injuries were reported.

In Arunachal Pradesh, relentless rain in West Kameng district triggered landslides that trapped vehicles near Jamiri, cutting off remote regions and halting road clearance work. Parts of Bomdila town also experienced power outages.

Widespread Red Alerts and Weather Warnings

The IMD has extended red alert warnings to Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh. A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring intense rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds until the end of the month.

Authorities are urging caution and preparedness, especially in vulnerable areas.
