Historic Recognition for Assamese Language

Assam will commemorate the recognition of Assamese as a Classical Language with a week-long celebration called ‘Bhasa Gaurob Saptah’. The festivities will be held from November 3 to 9, 2024, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Union Cabinet’s Approval

On October 3, the Union Cabinet granted Classical Language status to Assamese, along with Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Bengali. This recognition honors the rich heritage of the Assamese language, which dates back to the 4th century AD.

During ‘Bhasa Gaurob Saptah’, universities, schools, and civil society organizations will host events to pay tribute to the contributions of Assamese writers and scholars. These celebrations aim to showcase the literary and cultural achievements that have shaped the language over centuries.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in granting this prestigious status. The state cabinet, on October 8, passed a resolution expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister for recognizing Assamese’s historical and cultural importance.
