Thousands Take a Holy Dip in Barak River
Hailakandi, Assam – March 27, 2025: The Baruni Snan, often called the “Mini Kumbh” of South Assam’s Barak Valley, has begun. Thousands of devotees gathered at Kapilashram in Siddheswar, Hailakandi district, to take part in the sacred bathing ritual. Many believe that this ritual washes away sins and brings spiritual purity.
Baruni Mela: A Spiritual and Cultural Event
The fortnight-long Baruni Mela has also started, attracting pilgrims from across the region. Sujan Bhattacharjee, secretary of the Baruni Mela Committee, said the number of devotees would increase in the coming days.
“Like the Maha Kumbh Mela, people believe that bathing in the Barak River during this period brings divine blessings,” he explained.
Religious Significance of Baruni Snan
This sacred bath takes place on Madhukrishna Trayodashi under the Satabhisha Nakshatra. Many devotees also immerse the ashes (asthi) of their loved ones and perform tarpan, a ritual to honor ancestors. According to belief, the Barak River transforms into a Triveni Sangam on this day, making it even more special.
Siddheswar Temple (Kapilashram): A Historic Pilgrimage Site
The Siddheswar Temple, also called Kapilashram, is a major attraction during the Baruni Snan. Located 25 km from Hailakandi, in Thandapur near Panchgram, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Shivling, made of ancient stone, was installed by Sage Kapila, an important figure in Indian philosophy. Pilgrims from different states visit this site for blessings.
Security and Crowd Management
To manage the large crowd, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed. Officials are monitoring the event to ensure safety and prevent overcrowding.
A Grand Celebration of Faith and Tradition
As the Baruni Mela continues, Barak Valley has become a center of spirituality, devotion, and cultural festivities. Thousands more are expected in the next two weeks, making this one of Assam’s biggest religious gatherings.
