Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a strong statement regarding India’s strategic region, the Siliguri Corridor, often called the ‘Chicken Neck’, which connects Northeast India to the mainland.
Speaking on Sunday, Sarma pointed out that Bangladesh also has two critical narrow land corridors, which he claims are even more vulnerable than India’s.
What Is India’s Chicken Neck Corridor?
The Siliguri Corridor, a 22 to 35 km wide strip, is a crucial link between mainland India and its northeastern states. Due to its narrow size and strategic location, it has been a concern in India’s national security discussions.
Bangladesh’s Two Vulnerable Corridors
In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma said,
“Those who frequently threaten India over the Siliguri Corridor should remember Bangladesh has two chicken necks of its own—both far more fragile.”
He listed them as:
- North Bangladesh Corridor (80 km) – This stretch runs from Dakhin Dinajpur to South West Garo Hills. Sarma warned that any disruption here could completely cut off Rangpur Division from the rest of Bangladesh.
- Chittagong Corridor (28 km) – This route links South Tripura to the Bay of Bengal, and is the only land connection between Bangladesh’s economic hub Chittagong and its political capital Dhaka. A disturbance here could sever critical national connectivity, he added.
“Just Geographical Facts”
Sarma clarified that his remarks were not threats, but a reminder of strategic geography.
“I am only sharing geographical facts. Just as India has the Siliguri Corridor, Bangladesh too depends on its own fragile routes.”
He also mentioned India’s strong defense capabilities, citing Operation Sindoor as a recent example of military strength.
Conclusion
As regional security tensions rise, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s warning highlights the strategic vulnerabilities on both sides of the border. His comments have drawn attention to the need for cautious diplomacy and regional stability, especially in areas with such critical infrastructure.
