Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) will begin permanently sealing the leaking oil well at Rudrasagar field in Sivasagar, which has been spewing gas for the past nine days.
Emergency Plans A and B Fail, Plan C Now in Action
At a press conference on Friday, CM Sarma confirmed that Plan A and Plan B, the initial emergency measures used to control the leak, were unsuccessful. ONGC will now move to Plan C, a permanent capping method, involving international expertise.
“US experts will arrive in Sivasagar by this evening to assist ONGC,” Sarma stated.
Work to Begin Immediately, Completion Expected in 4–5 Days
The well capping operation is scheduled to begin tomorrow in coordination with US professionals. ONGC has already completed nearly 50% of the groundwork, including equipment mobilisation and site preparation.
“This is a safer and more practical strategy after several attempts. We expect to finish within five days,” the Chief Minister noted.
Over 1,500 People Evacuated to Safer Areas
Due to the gas leak, 1,500 residents from nearby villages around the Rudrasagar rig were shifted to safer locations. The well is located dangerously close to a river embankment, raising serious concerns about potential flood-related disasters.
“Had heavy rains hit the area, the situation could have worsened significantly,” Sarma warned.
Compensation for Affected Families
The district administration and ONGC are jointly conducting an assessment of damages. The ONGC chairman has assured full compensation for affected families.
“People’s safety and proper compensation remain our top priority,” Sarma said.
Background of the Incident
The leak started on June 12 at Well No. RDS 147A, under Rig No. SKP 135 at Barichuk in Bhatiapar. The well was being operated by private contractor SK Petro Services on behalf of ONGC.
Accountability and Investigation Will Follow
When asked about potential action against the private firm, Sarma clarified:
“The first goal is to seal the leak safely. Investigations and further action will follow.”
Continuous Monitoring by Central and State Governments
Both the Government of India and the Government of Assam are keeping a close eye on the situation.
“We are monitoring the issue 24×7 to ensure public safety, restore normalcy, and resolve the crisis quickly,” Sarma assured.
