In response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that 14 individuals have been arrested for posting pro-Pakistan and anti-India content on social media. He also issued a strong warning that the National Security Act (NSA) could be used against those found spreading anti-national sentiments.

Following the Pahalgam tragedy, which killed at least 26 people, including many tourists, the Assam government has intensified its monitoring of online platforms. CM Sarma announced that any social media post supporting enemy nations like Pakistan will result in strict action.

India and Pakistan are enemy nations, and will continue to be so,” said Sarma during a press briefing at the BJP state office in Guwahati.

The Assam Police crackdown includes several arrests from across the state:

  • Two people from Cachar were arrested for uploading pro-Pak content.
  • One person from Sribhumi was taken into custody after posting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ on Facebook.
  • Arrests were also made in Hailakandi and Nagaon districts.
  • An AIUDF MLA, Aminul Islam, and another individual were also detained earlier in the week.

In a social media update, CM Sarma said:
Total 14 arrests have been made so far for sharing seditious and pro-Pakistan content online.”

The state is now reviewing social media activities closely, and the Chief Minister has reiterated that anti-India voices will not be tolerated.

If needed, NSA will be used to deal with these people. Every post is being examined,” Sarma added.
