Four Bodies Recovered from Collapsed Mine in Assam
The joint rescue team, including the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Coal India, has recovered the fourth body from the flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. The illegal mine, located in the 3 Kilo Umrangso area, collapsed last week, leaving eight miners still trapped underground.
Continuous Rescue Operations Underway
Efforts to rescue the trapped miners continue with round-the-clock dewatering operations. HPS Kandari, Commandant of the 1st Battalion, NDRF, stated, “If all the water is drained out, we can proceed with the search operation inside. So far, four bodies have been recovered.”
Coal India Provides Additional Support
Coal India has stepped in to aid rescue operations. Sanjay Kumar, General Manager of Coal India, confirmed that a high-capacity pump has been arranged from Nagpur. Smaller pumps are already operational, helping reduce the water level by six meters. A platform is being constructed to lower pipes for further drainage.
Victims Identified
The second victim, identified as Lt. Lijen Magar (27) from Kalamati village, was recovered during the ongoing operation. The first body, identified as Ganga Bahadur Shreth, was found on January 8, 2025.
Illegal Mining Confirmed
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the mine was operating illegally. A case has been registered under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. An individual, Punish Nunisa, has been arrested in connection with the illegal operation.
Special Rescue Teams Join Efforts
A 12-member specialised rescue team from Coal India joined the mission on Friday. The teams, including the Assam Rifles, have been working tirelessly to locate and rescue the trapped miners.
Ongoing Rescue Efforts
Inspector Roushan Kumar Singh of the 1st Battalion, NDRF, shared updates on the progress. “The water level has decreased significantly due to overnight pumping. Rescue efforts are in full swing to reach the trapped miners.”
Government Seeks Additional Support
The Chief Minister discussed the situation with Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy to seek further assistance for the rescue operations.
The tragedy highlights the dangers of illegal mining operations and the ongoing commitment of rescue teams to save lives.
