The Assam government is investing over Rs 1,800 crore to upgrade the infrastructure of 252 state-run educational facilities, aiming to modernize schools in rural areas. This initiative focuses on improving government vernacular schools, selected from each of the 126 assembly constituencies across the state. The project, funded by the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), involves significant renovations, with construction costs ranging from Rs 7 crore to Rs 8 crore per school. The work is in progress and will be completed soon.

As part of the broader education initiative, Assam’s Finance Minister had announced plans to revamp 322 schools with a total expenditure of Rs 2,369.86 crore. Though details about the future of the medium of instruction remain uncertain, there are discussions about whether the schools will continue as vernacular mediums or transition to dual mediums by adding English alongside local languages.

Prominent schools undergoing renovations include Patacharkuchi Vidyapith, Earle HS School, Graham Bazar Girls’ High School, and Nalbari Girls’ High School, among others. This investment highlights the Assam government’s commitment to improving the educational infrastructure and providing students with better learning environments across the state.
